Sex for survival: Terrorism, poverty and sexual violence in north-eastern Nigeria

This study advances the discourse on factors behind conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). Focusing terrorism-affected north-eastern Nigeria, it argues that terrorism creates poor economic conditions compel women and girls to engage in transactional sex exchange for money, food, shelter, protection, marriage, despite risks of socio-legal persecutions. further intensifies vulnerability violation by security force personnel aid workers who may exploit their positions relative power. Furthermore, lax government response rise CRSV, partly arising from this trade sex, has contributed its growth. Thus, builds debate regarding motivations CRSV. It economy framework building Elisabeth Wood’s discussion ‘toleration’ violence. pattern CRSV also implications state’s capacity access intelligence purpose curbing terrorism.
